You know that old saying, "Life's a bitch and then you die", it's not far from wrong this year! All of this past Spring, I was sick with bronchitis and gastritis, my Mom has severe dementia, then she fell a few weeks ago and broke her hip. That was bad enough, but she fell the week before the deer season started! My brother Elbis and I also had to go to court to get curatorship over her and cancel the P.O.A. that my youngest brother had, what fun.
I have been lucky enough to get to…

October 1st was the first day of our Mississippi archery season. It was cool for a change, in the 50s, a record low for our area. There were only four of us there for the opener, but this is not uncommon for our small group. Rob, Zack, Chipper, and I were ready for our first day in the woods with some anger in our hearts, not really. We were just happy that the season had finally arrived, ready for some cool Fall air and some time in the woods. I think only Chipper actually saw a deer,…

This past weekend, we planted 16 food plots of varying sizes. It's close to 12 acres. We planted a game mix that is formulated for our area of Southwest Mississippi. The cost of seed and fertilizer has sure gone up, but I'm sure that all of you hunters have found that out already. We had perfect weather for planting. The highs were in the mid 80s and the mornings were in the mid 60s.
We were only missing one member, who had to work. Everyone busted their butts to get it done, with…

Last weekend, we had our August work weekend at West Fork Hunting Club in Liberty, Ms. Our main goal was to repair all of our camp stands. Each of us are responsible for two camp stands, but several of us have way more than that. Bubba Bear, Rob and our three new club members took care of the South Side and Chipper, Elbis and I took care of the North Side. We had some over lap, but we checked and repaired most all of the stands.
My crew repaired the ladder on food plot #4, added a…

I know it sounds strange for me to say, but it's too hot to think too much about hunting. I was sitting on the covered patio this evening and thought, it feels pretty cool, I wonder what the temp is. I got over and went over the my Ex-lax thermometer see what the temp was, it was only 95 degrees, nearly a damned frost. When you get use to the heat, just not having direct sun is cool.
This has been a tough year for me, asthma for several months, and then I thought I was having…

It's been a tough year in central NY due to the weather and a little health issue of mine.....but...if all works out I still have a couple of weeks but the monsoon season has to stop...its gonna be a tough nesting season for the turks if the weather dosen't straighten out...this weather is no good for the hunter or the turkeys...

The last several months have been kinda crazy for me, I've been down with asthma pretty bad this year. I started with it around this past Thanksgiving, just like last year. Looks to be a seasonal thing, I think that it's Baton Rouge pollution. We live on the Southeast side of town and all of the plants are on the Northwest side, so when the Fall and Winter winds come out of the Northwest, all the bad air is sent to my house. That's just my theory. I have another appointment with the…

This past deer season was a rough one for me. I did get to the camp fairly regularly, but I didn't feel like hunting much. I had what the doctor said was either Occult Asthma or Bronchitis, he's not sure yet. I'm happy to see the season over, just to force me to stay inside more and hopefully get better. The season was good for some members in our club, they took several deer and one real good one. Bubba Bear got an 8 point that might have been a 10 point if the two drop tines hadn't broken…

You know that you're getting old, when you talk about your ailments, a lot! I've had another tough year with pleurisy, asthma, or bronchitis, who knows, the doctor can't decide. It has made getting out hunting kinda tough this year. I've hunted just a few times, I stayed at the camp mostly and hunted only when I felt really good. That hasn't been too many times. Luckily I have several box stands so that I can at least stay dry and warm on the bad weather days.
The best part…

I laugh to myself all the time when I think about our current "Primitive Weapons" season. Guys say that they would rather bow hunt than use a gun. Through out history, warriors and hunters have always gone to the better weapon. Custer got his butt killed along with his troopers, because he had single shot breech loaders and the Indians had repeaters. Danial Boone would have loved to have had a Browning Automatic rifle or lever action. I understand a man wanting a challenge, but why then use…

It seems like we have been hunting for months, and the rut is not here yet. We flip flop back and forth between 80 degrees and 23 degrees about every three days, and it's taking it's toll on me. I'm coming down with something again. I've been to the doctor more times this year, than any year in my memory, except for my football playing days. I think that I've developed asthma in my old age and now I've got something on top of that. Maybe it's good that I'll be home for the next two weekends.…
