This past deer season was a rough one for me. I did get to the camp fairly regularly, but I didn't feel like hunting much. I had what the doctor said was either Occult Asthma or Bronchitis, he's not sure yet. I'm happy to see the season over, just to force me to stay inside more and hopefully get better. The season was good for some members in our club, they took several deer and one real good one. Bubba Bear got an 8 point that might have been a 10 point if the two drop tines hadn't broken off and it weighted 199 pounds. That's a great deer for Amite County, Mississippi. We have more pines than hardwoods and no agricultural plantings. We do have 17 food plots, but the deer hardly used the plots at all this season, I don't know why, but have some suspicions!
I saw a lot of hog sign toward the end of the season in January. My feeling is that we need to do a lot of hog hunting to seriously put a dent in their population. We also need to thin out the bobcats and the coyotes. We have hog hunted for the past several years, but not seriously. We better start if we want to have any deer on the place. I am seeing few turkeys this year too.
We are thinking about supplemental with Vita-Rack 26 this year and using Purina QuickDraw Wild Hog Blocks to bait the hogs in so that we can get more hogs in to thin them out. The Vita-Rack 26 will help eliminate some of the parasites in our deer herd. This should improve rack sizes and increase body weights. I'm excited to see how this works.
Well, hopefully, I'll get to feeling better this Spring and get back to building new and improved box stands that I have plans for in my head and get back to better management of our deer lease. Stands need to be replaced, roads need to be fixed, trails need to be trimmed and there are a few projects to be done around the camp. I also have to get ready setting up the hog hunt for the ladies in March, so I have my work cut out for me. Time to "Git R Done"!
